Sirona Technologies is one of eight suppliers in a new round of durable carbon removal purchases completed by Milkywire for Salesforce.
In the words of the announcement, "Sirona Technologies will build the world's first heat pump integration on a commercial DAC project, a test in energy efficiency with sector-wide learning value." The contracted volume for Sirona is 390 tonnes.
Sirona's Direct Air Capture machines capture CO₂ from ambient air on a sorbent and then apply heat to release it as a concentrated stream for permanent storage. Heat makes up a large share of a DAC plant's energy demand, which makes it one of the main levers on the cost and energy footprint of each tonne removed.
A heat pump delivers more heat than the electricity it consumes. Integrating one into a commercial DAC project reduces the electricity required per tonne of CO₂ removed. Sirona will build this integration at Project Furu, its DAC facility at CCB Energy Park in Øygarden, Norway, where captured CO₂ is sent to permanent geological storage.
The results will inform the design of Sirona's next generation of modular machines and future deployments across its project portfolio.
"Energy is the biggest cost driver in Direct Air Capture, and heat is where most of it goes. Proving a heat pump integration on a commercial project in Norway gives us real operating data to bring the cost per tonne down as we scale. We're glad to have Milkywire on board at this stage."
Milkywire is an impact firm with eight years of experience helping companies take action for climate and nature, creating ambitious climate strategies and channeling funding to durable carbon removal and other critical solutions that global climate targets depend on. Milkywire has facilitated purchases of more than $12 million of durable carbon removal across 45+ projects in more than 20 countries, and is a top-three global carbon removal buyer by project diversity.
Sirona Technologies develops and operates modular Direct Air Capture machines that permanently remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and store it through mineralization. Built in Belgium and deployed globally, Sirona delivers high-credibility carbon removal with transparent measurement, reporting, and verification. Following the commissioning of its first commercial units, Sirona is scaling capacity across multiple regions through the second half of the decade.
