Sirona Technologies unveils Project Furu - commercial-scale DAC in Norway

We're excited to announce Project Furu, Sirona Technologies' next commercial Direct Air Capture plant, to be developed at Øygarden on the west coast of Norway, directly next to the Northern Lights CO₂ transport and storage facility.

The announcement was made by our CEO Thoralf Gutierrez on stage at CRCF Days in Brussels, the EU's flagship event for the new Carbon Removal Certification Framework.

Project Furu is our European flagship, and one of the most strategically positioned DAC projects in the world.

A site engineered for permanent removal at scale

Project Furu is located in Øygarden, Vestland County, in an industrial area owned by Øygarden municipality and CCB Energy. This site combines three crucial elements for DAC:

- A clean, low-cost grid. Norway's electricity mix is over 90% hydropower, with the remainder from wind and other renewables. It is among the cheapest and cleanest power on earth - the ideal energy input for DAC.

- An operational CCS storage hub next door. Northern Lights is Europe's first commercial-scale open-access CO₂ storage facility, and it is already injecting today.

- A local ecosystem actively building this future. CCB Energy is developing the area of 1.4 km² to be a green industrial hub, specifically for large-scale green industry, with the explicit aim of creating synergies between co-located projects.

Built with Norway's CCS ecosystem

Project Furu is developed in partnership with CCB Energy. CCB is also building CarbonLink, a shared aggregation infrastructure designed to bundle smaller DAC volumes and deliver them into Northern Lights' pipeline, a critical enabler for DAC projects of our size.

A scaling roadmap from pilot to commercial

Project Furu scales in phases, all on the same site. Phase 1 is ready to deploy. We already have the site, permits and energy. We'll ship our first container and build the operational track record that unlocks project finance for the next phases. We will be running on catch-and-release until CarbonLink comes online and expect to start with a capture capacity of 10,000 t/yr in 2029, reaching +100,000 t/yr in the years after. This phased path is designed to scale capture, storage, grid and financing in lockstep, and to start delivering high-integrity credits as the European compliance market opens up.

The timing matters: Europe is building the compliance market for DAC

Project Furu launches at a pivotal moment. The European Commission has just adopted the first set of certification methodologies under the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) for permanent removals. DACCS is on track for inclusion in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), opening the door to a true compliance market for direct air capture and storage. And Sirona has submitted Project Furu to the EU Innovation Fund, the EU's flagship instrument for accelerating commercial-scale climate technology.

Because Norway is part of the European Economic Area, Project Furu is uniquely positioned to supply into the EU compliance carbon market once it opens to DAC, a market that is expected to be orders of magnitude larger than today's voluntary market.

"Project Furu brings together everything you want in a DAC project: a clean grid, operational storage next door, the right partners, and a regulatory framework that's finally catching up with the technology. Europe is putting the incentives in place and we are putting the projects on the ground."
— Thoralf Gutierrez, CEO & co-founder of Sirona Technologies

About Sirona Technologies

Sirona Technologies develops and operates Direct Air Capture modules that permanently remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and securely store it underground. Sirona's container-based DAC systems are mass-produced in Belgium and deployed globally. With its pilot plant operational since January 2025, Sirona became the world's fastest DAC company to deploy a pilot plant on site. Sirona is also one of the very few actors offering DAC credits on the market as of 2026.
