About Sirona Technologies

At Sirona Technologies, we are developing direct air capture (DAC) technology to remove CO2 from the air and combat climate change. As a startup in the scale up phase, we are focused on learning from our existing production systems to inform the improvements in our next production systems, and pushing our machines to large series. And doing so as quickly as possible to reduce costs as quickly as possible.

We're looking for a talented and mission-driven electrical engineer to join our Machine team: a small group of engineers with a complete skill set, able to design the full machine. You will own the electrical architecture of our machines, from the cabinet design in Belgium through CE marking, to the site preparation and the deployment of our machines on industrial sites (today above 100 kW, soon several MW, grid connected).

At Sirona, engineers own the full value chain of their system with a strong do-er mindset. We call this the responsible engineer framework: you define the requirements, design, procure, build, test and deploy your system. Afterwards, you remain the support of the operators and you learn from them to improve the next generation.

The electrical scope alone does not fill a full-time role. Beyond it, you will contribute to the team as an electromechanical engineer designing machine subsystems, Instrumentation engineer, or as an automation engineer, depending on your strengths and interests.

Responsibilities

As an electrical engineer, you will:

  • Own the electrical architecture of the Plant: power distribution, protection, cabling, earthing, motor and drive integration, improving the current design and preparing it for large series.
  • Design the electrical cabinets and the functional safety functions (relay-based safety circuits, emergency stops, interlocks), and ideally contribute to the automation layer (PLC, instrumentation cabling).
  • Own the CE marking of the machine from an electrical and safety standpoint (Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, EMC, EN 60204-1): keep the design compliant, stay aware of regulatory changes and push the required changes into the design.
  • Prepare our industrial sites: define the electrical requirements of the site (power demand, grid connection, distribution up to the machines) and interface with the site owner and the local contractors.
  • Deploy on site: lead the electrical installation, testing and energisation of the capture units and anxiliaries.
  • Support the responsible engineers of the other subsystems in the selection and integration of motors, drives and compressors (sizing, efficiency, VFDs, duty cycles).
  • Take your subsystems through the full cycle: define requirements, design, procure, build, test, deploy, then support the operators and feed the learnings back into the next design.
  • Contribute to the machine beyond electricity: design electromechanical subsystems, design the instrumentation chains or develop automation, depending on your profile.
Requirements
  • A technician background with solid industrial experience will also be considered. Master in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Several years of professional experience in industry (industrial machine building, industrial plants or a comparable environment), for instance as an electrical, E&I or automation engineer.
  • Hands-on experience with LV power systems for industrial machines: cabinet design, protection and selectivity, cabling, motors and variable frequency drives.
  • Knowledge of the CE marking regulations applicable to industrial machines (Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, EMC, EN 60204-1) and of relay-based safety functions.
  • Ability to be a versatile member of a small team: comfortable working as an electromechanical or automation engineer when the electrical workload is low.
  • Strong do-er mindset: you enjoy taking a system from a blank page to a commissioned installation, and you are comfortable procuring, building and testing what you designed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a pragmatic approach to engineering challenges.
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Smart but humble, with a bias for action.
Nice to haves
  • Experience in handling electrical contractors during the EPC phase of an industrial project.
  • Experience with PLC programming and industrial automation (Siemens, Beckhoff or similar).
  • Experience with MV distribution and grid connection of multi-MW industrial sites.
  • Experience with electrical drawing programs
  • Experience with risk assessment and HAZOP studies, and with functional safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061).
  • Experience in instrumentation: selection, installation and commissioning of process sensors (pressure, temperature, flow, level) and industrial communication protocols (4-20 mA/HART, IO-Link, Modbus, Profinet or similar).

If you're passionate about fighting climate change and eager to join a fast-paced organization where your contributions will have a substantial impact, we'd love to hear from you.

Send us an email with a brief description of the work you've done that you are the most proud of.
